BC Transit to unveil new $3.8-million, user-friendly website this spring
One of the key changes is a streamlined navigation system intended to reduce the number of steps needed to find essential information. Trip-planning tools, fare details, and maps will now be more prominently displayed, allowing users to locate what they need more quickly.
Accessibility has also been a central focus of the redesign. The updated website meets the latest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), ensuring improved usability for people with disabilities. In addition, the platform has been optimized for mobile devices, reflecting the fact that more than 80 per cent of users access public transit information via smartphones or tablets.
Before the official launch, the website will undergo final rounds of technical testing and validation. While an exact official launch date has not yet been confirmed, BC Transit has indicated this date will be announced later this month.
Ongoing updates and refinements to the website are planned as user feedback is collected.
The website redesign project carries a budget of $3.8 million and has been funded jointly by the provincial government and BC Transit’s various municipal and regional government partners. The initiative was completed in two phases, including a transition to a new content management system, updated hosting infrastructure, and a full redesign of the site’s interface.
This is in addition to BC Transit’s recent adoption of Cubic Transportation Systems’ Umo digital fare payment platform, which offers a smartphone app with on-app fare payment options and some wayfinding features.
