If you&#8217;re planning a trip to Bali soon, take note: Canada has just updated its travel advisory for Indonesia with a new warning.
On Monday, March 3, the Government of Canada revised its travel advice for Bali, specifically highlighting safety and security concerns in the popular Indonesian holiday destination. The island is known for its pristine beaches, tiered rice terraces, and iconic temples; however, tourists are being urged to plan ahead due to the upcoming Balinese New Year, a major event that could affect their travel plans.
&#8220;Balinese New Year (Nyepi), also known as the &#8216;Bali Day of Silence,&#8217; will take place on March 19, 2026,&#8221; reads the statement. &#8220;Bali Island comes to a standstill for 24 hours. Lights, music and noise are prohibited. Transport is halted, and everyone must stay home.&#8221;
It&#8217;s also important to note that Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali will suspend operations from March 19 at 6 a.m. to March 20 at 6 a.m. This shutdown could cause delays, as any passengers who are in transit will be required to stay inside the airport during this time. And it&#8217;s not just the airport — harbours and businesses across the island will also remain closed.

As the entire island observes 24 hours of silence, tourists must turn off all lights, stay indoors, and avoid overland travel.
Nyepi is a spiritually significant day for Balinese Hindus, according to <a href="https://thebalisun.com/bali-tourists-given-important-updates-about-upcoming-nyepi-day-protocols/" target="_blank">The Bali Sun</a>. Traditionally, electricity is prohibited, but most hotels, resorts, and temporary accommodations will still keep electricity on. Guests will be urged to limit electricity use, particularly lighting. Local TV broadcasts will be turned off, and cellular data packages will be limited; however, internet access and speeds will not be affected.
As a result of the shutdown, the Canadian government is reminding tourists to adjust their plans accordingly and to prepare ahead with adequate food and water supplies, as &#8220;hotels may not offer food service during Balinese New Year.&#8221;
