Aritzia buys Fred Segal brand, plans revival of iconic Melrose flagship store
“We are honoured to steward and evolve this iconic brand for a new generation with the elevated experience and Everyday Luxury that define Aritzia.”
Founded in 1961, Fred Segal was known for shaping the “California cool” aesthetic and its stores in Los Angeles were known for being a major cultural and celebrity hub, becoming pop culture references over time.
The chain’s remaining brick-and-mortar operations and online store closed in 2024. The company’s namesake founder died in 2021.

At the Melrose store location, Aritzia intends to restore the property, including its ivy-covered facade, which was damaged by a recent storm. Furthermore, over the coming years, the site will evolve into an “entirely new, experiential destination that reflects the creative spirit that has defined both brands,” according to a news release.
“The space will bring together curated product and immersive experiences that transcend traditional retail while also serving as a dynamic lifestyle hub.”
Following Fred Segal’s closure of the Melrose location, Aritzia opened a “Super World” temporary pop-up store, featuring its Super Puff collection.
In 2021, Aritzia also bought Canadian men’s clothing and apparel retailer Reigning Champ.
Fred Segal’s rebooted Instagram account made its first post today, with a caption that reads: “Honouring a cultural icon and unearthing new potential.”
