Drivers warned of overnight Highway 1 delays due to Ironworkers Bridge repairs
“During the work, Highway 1 eastbound will be closed completely, and traffic will flow one lane in each direction on the westbound side,” said the Ministry in a release. The closures are necessary to allow the Ministry of Transportation and Transit’s maintenance contractor to complete deck and joint repairs on the bridge.
“As this work is weather dependent, timelines may shift as needed. Drivers travelling through the area can access an alternative route via the Lions Gate Bridge. A steel plate will remain in place each day to protect work in progress. Median guardrails will be replaced with traffic barrels and impact attenuators throughout the day.”
Lane closures are expected to be in place from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. The Ironworkers Memorial Bridge’s eastbound sidewalk will stay open, though the Ministry added that it is encouraging cyclists and pedestrians to adjust their routes to avoid the work zone.

General commercial traffic that is three metres or less will still be able to access the bridge during the construction, but oversized loads will need to obtain special permits to cross.
“Drivers are reminded to obey all traffic signage and traffic-control personnel in the area and adjust speeds as posted through the construction zone,” added the Ministry of Transportation and Transit.
“Drivers should plan additional travel time through the route during the closure schedule and expect delays around the start time each night.”

The Ironworkers Memorial Bridge is not the only Vancouver crossing to see delays this month.
Rehabilitation work on the Granville Street Bridge south ramps will cause nightly lane closures between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday until early April.
According to the City of Vancouver, construction on the decks of the four ramps used to enter and exit the bridge on the south side, as well as on the piers supporting the ramps from below, is ongoing until this summer.
