A Metro Vancouver woman is speaking out after she was the victim of a racist incident on the SkyTrain this week.
Elise Song told Daily Hive that she had been taking the SkyTrain from Waterfront to Richmond-Brighouse Station on Thursday, just before 11 p.m.
At around 10:53 p.m., she said a man got on the SkyTrain at Marine Drive Station and appeared to &#8220;shove&#8221; a South Asian woman as he entered.
He then took a seat in front of Song, who is Chinese Canadian. At the time, she was wearing a medical mask.
&#8220;Once seated, he began verbally harassing me about the medical mask I was wearing, demanded &#8216;Where are you from?&#8217; and ordered me to &#8216;go back&#8217; to my country while stating his own Scottish ancestry,&#8221; Song said.
She managed to record the incident on her cell phone.

In the video, the man says something inaudible before telling Song to &#8220;take the mask off.&#8221;
She replies telling him to &#8220;f*ck off.&#8221;
&#8220;Get out of here. It&#8217;s my country&#8230; You don&#8217;t know where you&#8217;re from. Go home,&#8221; he demands.
Song attempts to stand up for herself, telling the man he is a &#8220;pathetic racist.&#8221;
The man continues to complain about her mask, as Song keeps on filming.
He then declares that he is from Scotland. &#8220;We formed this county,&#8221; he tells Song.
&#8220;This is Canada, so go back to your country then,&#8221; she says, adding that he should &#8220;look up online who formed this country.&#8221;
At one point, a fellow passenger steps in and tells the man that &#8220;people can wear what they want&#8221; and that he&#8217;s an &#8220;immigrant too,&#8221; referring to his Scottish roots.
&#8220;Nobody agrees with you,&#8221; adds the passenger.
The man exits the train, and Song thanks the other passenger for speaking up.
Song, who lives in Richmond, says she takes the SkyTrain about once a week to commute to and from downtown Vancouver.
&#8220;I have never experienced anything like this before, so I was shaken and in total shock,&#8221; she said.
Song contacted Metro Vancouver Transit Police (MVTP) to report the incident.
Sgt. Dustin Szakacs with MVTP confirmed that investigators have been assigned to the file and have conducted a follow-up with the victim.
&#8220;We take incidents such as this very seriously, and as such, a full investigation is currently underway in hopes of identifying the unknown male; all investigational avenues are being pursued,&#8221; he stated.
Song said the altercation has left her angry, &#8220;but also motivated.&#8221;
&#8220;The incident was a stark reminder that racism exists even in places where I normally feel safe and respected,&#8221; she shared.
&#8220;I want to share my experience to raise awareness so others feel empowered to stand up for themselves, respond safely, and help when they witness harassment.&#8221;
