TransLink seeks public input on long-term plan to improve bus route network in Surrey and Langley
Since the pandemic, Metro Vancouver has seen some of its highest public transit ridership growth in areas such as Surrey and Langley, with the South of Fraser East area being propelled by rapid population growth and higher-density development.
These areas are also expected to see a recalibration of the bus network over the coming years, upon the completion of the SkyTrain’s 16-km-long Expo Line Surrey-Langley extension in late 2029. The proposed King George Boulevard Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line between Surrey City Centre and Semiahmoo Town Centre in South Surrey could also lead to further changes to overall local bus services.
“Growth south of the Fraser is happening fast, and transit has to keep up in a way that matches how people actually travel,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn.
“This engagement is a real opportunity to influence what improvements come next, and where they’re needed most. We’re listening, and your feedback will help guide the plan and the priorities that follow.”

Once created, this new plan will replace the 2007-made South of Fraser Area Transport Plan to better reflect how travel patterns have evolved. Significant components of the previous plan have already been enacted, such as the implementation of B-Line/RapidBus routes of the R2 King George Boulevard and the R6 Scott Road.
TransLink’s online survey for the initial public consultation is open now through Feb. 27, 2026. This survey asks general questions related to the principles for improving the bus network and active transportation.
A second round of public consultation will occur by early 2027, when the draft recommended actions are ready. Then, later in 2027, a third round of public consultation is planned for the final plan.
In 2024, City of Surrey staff told Surrey City Council that while there are plenty of north-south bus routes in their jurisdiction, there is a major need for more east-west bus routes to fill major gaps in the city’s overall bus network.

In early 2025, TransLink completed public consultation for the final plan of its new Burrard Peninsula Area Transport Plan, which outlined new and improved bus routes for implementation within Vancouver, the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus, University Endowment Lands, Burnaby, and New Westminster. This includes identifying how the bus network will be recalibrated following the openings of SkyTrain’s Millennium Line Broadway extension reaching Arbutus in 2027 and the proposed UBC extension potentially in the 2030s, as well as rerouting existing local bus routes and introducing new local, crosstown, and express bus routes.
Potentially, a new local bus route that runs along the entirety of Stanley Park Drive — the perimeter road of Stanley Park — that starts and ends at Waterfront Station could be launched as early as 2027.
Both new area-specific plans will build on TransLink’s Transport 2050 strategy and 10-year priorities.
The new Burrard Peninsula Area Transport Plan will be published later in 2026, while the South of Fraser East Area Transport Plan will be finalized in 2027.
