New eye-catching Metro Vancouver crosswalk unveiled to honour veterans
The commemorative crosswalk was designed through an inclusive engagement process involving veterans’ organizations, community partners, and accessibility advisors.
Members of the Royal Canadian Legion, local Army Cadets, Richmond City Council, and a local MP and MLA were in attendance at the unveiling today.
Pedestrians and drivers will be able to see the crosswalk near Richmond City Hall and the Cenotaph, with a stylized maple leaf and the phrase “Lest We Forget” emblazoned on it.
The crosswalk features elements of the Royal Canadian Legion’s national commemorative design and was completed in August for a budget of $20,000.
The unveiling also took place a day before the annual Military Family Appreciation Day, held each year on the third Friday in September. According to the Royal Canadian Air Force, the day honours the daily service and sacrifice made by Canadian Armed Forces personnel and their families.
