Canadian icon Catherine O'Hara dead at 71

In a shocking turn of events, Catherine O’Hara, Canadian actress, comedian and icon, is dead at 71, according to multiple reports.
O’Hara is known for her work in classic films like Home Alone and the hit Emmy Award-winning series Schitt’s Creek.
Comedy fans will also remember her work on the Canadian sketch show SCTV, where she shared the screen with other Canadian legends like Martin Short and John Candy.
A cause of death has yet to be revealed.
O’Hara was born in Toronto, and SCTV was her first big break. She won an Emmy Award for outstanding writing on the show.
Her profile rose further for her roles in Beetlejuice and, of course, Home Alone and Home Alone 2, playing Macaulay Culkin’s mom.
She introduced Culkin when he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
More recently, she received acclaim for her work on Schitt’s Creek, alongside another former SCTV cast member and friend, Eugene Levy. O’Hara played the matriarch of the family, Moira Rose. She won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a TV Series Musical or Comedy.
She also had a small role on the hit HBO show The Last of Us.
According to Page Six, her last public appearance was in September 2025 during a red carpet event in Hollywood.
Tributes from celebrities who’ve worked with O’Hara are starting to pour out.
In a touching tribute, Pedro Pascal, who got to work with O’Hara on The Last of Us, said, “Oh, genius to be near you. Eternally grateful. There is less light in my world, this lucky world that had you, will keep you, always,” adding, “The one and only, Catherine O’Hara.”
Culkin has also posted a heart-wrenching tribute to O’Hara.
