The best grocery credit cards in Canada, depending on where you shop

Feb 25 2026, 9:44 pm

Canadians who want to get more bang for their buck when doing groceries may want to consider credit cards that work best with their go-to stores.

Although overall inflation has cooled, food inflation continues to soar. So much so that Canada’s Food Price Report for 2026 forecasted overall food prices to increase by four to six per cent, meaning an average family of four is expected to spend $17,571.79 on food this year.

To help offset your rising grocery bill, Ratehub.ca has compiled a list of the best credit cards in Canada for groceries by store.

“Canadians who shop across multiple stores without a credit card strategy are consistently leaving money on the table,” explains Natasha Macmillan, senior business director for everyday banking at Ratehub.ca. “For instance, earning one per cent back at one store versus five per cent at another on a $300 weekly grocery run is a difference of roughly $600 a year.”

Here are the best credit cards for groceries, depending on where your go-to store is.

CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite Card

Best credit card for Loblaws (No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Fortinos, Independent, and more)

According to Ratehub.ca, this is the optimal credit card for Loblaw-owned stores due to its rewards on everyday essentials.

“On top of the one per cent earn rate for all purchases, this card earns an industry-leading four per cent cash back on both groceries and gas purchases – two of the most common spending categories for Canadian households,” reads the report.

Because it’s a Visa credit card, it’s also widely accepted at No Frills, which does not take American Express, making it the best fit for Canadians who shop at Loblaw’s discount stores.

Best credit card for Sobeys (Sobeys, Safeway, Foodland, FreshCo, Thrifty Foods, and more)

Ratehub.ca says owning an Amex Cobalt is highly worth it for its “unbeatable” five points per $1 spent on groceries.

“The card offers a flexible point redemption system, a strong travel insurance policy, and a generous welcome bonus,” writes Macmillan. “With its top-notch rewards system, cardholders earn 5x the points on eligible restaurants, groceries, and food delivery purchases (spend cap applies), 3x the points on eligible streaming services, and 2x the points on ride shares, transit, and gas.”

Ratehub.ca does note that while this card is accepted at most Sobeys-owned stores like Safeway and Thrifty Foods, it is still not accepted at many discount chains like FreshCo and Loblaw-owned stores.

Moi RBC Visa Rewards Credit Card

Best credit card for Metro (Metro, Food Basics, Super C, and more)

If your go-to grocery store is Metro, Ratehub.ca says this is the best credit card to use because it will net you two points per dollar.

“Even though this card charges no annual fee, it comes with two years of mobile device insurance, 90-day purchase security, and one year of extended warranty on eligible products purchased with your card,” reads the report. “This makes it one of the best no-fee credit cards tied directly to a major Canadian grocery loyalty program.”

Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard

Rogers

Best credit card for Costco

Ratehub.ca says this is the best credit card if you do groceries at Costco Canada because it offers unlimited 1.5 per cent cash back (or two per cent if you’re a Rogers, Shaw or Fido customer) on all purchases.

“This means that even though Costco isn’t recognized as a grocery store by Mastercard, you’ll still earn more rewards than with other Mastercard credit cards,” reads the report.

It also notes that Costco Canada only accepts Mastercard, which is why this is the optimal card to use.

Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card

Best credit card for Walmart

This card has no annual fee and allows holders to choose their own bonus categories, which will earn a strong cash back rate of two per cent per dollar spent.

“The two per cent cash back per dollar on bonus categories is one of the richest earn rates for a no-fee card, and cash back is paid monthly (instead of the standard annual reimbursement), allowing you to enjoy the benefits of your cash back faster,” reads the report.

This card works best for Walmart because it usually codes as “grocery” with many Mastercard products, which makes it useful for shoppers who want flexibility across multiple spending categories.
