Three Canadian women have a reason to celebrate after buying a winning lottery ticket during a routine stop at Shoppers Drug Mart.

For Manitoba residents Kelly Rowsell, her mother Marilyn Webster, and friend Judy Mager, buying a lottery ticket has long been a shared tradition — one they always hoped would pay off someday. One day, Rowsell, who’s from Niverville, was at a Shoppers Drug Mart in Winnipeg when she purchased a Lotto 6/49 ticket.

After the draw, Webster checked their ticket using the Lotto Spot app and saw that they had won, but there was some confusion.

“My mom [Marilyn] scanned the ticket on the app and thought it was a $250 winner,” Rowsell recalled. “When she scanned it again, she saw all the zeroes — it was unbelievable!”

The lucky day had finally arrived, and to their surprise, they won a $250,000 prize in the Feb. 7 Lotto 6/49 and Extra draw. Still unable to process just how much they won, they headed to the store to check again.

“We rushed to the store to check the ticket on the self-scanner and then again on the terminal,” Rowsell said. “It’s unbelievable! We are in shock — completely stunned!”

While claiming their big cheque, each winner shared exciting plans for their windfall: Rowsell is heading to Italy with her daughter, while Webster, also from Niverville, wants to reconnect with loved ones.

“I’ll be headed to Newfoundland to visit family,” she said.

Mager also plans to treat herself but will stay closer to home in Winnipeg.

“Judy is going to buy a golf cart,” Rowsell added with a laugh.

Rowsell purchased the winning ticket at the Shoppers Drug Mart at 2656 Pembina Highway in Winnipeg.
