Saskatchewan premier wants Canada to limit social media for kids

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said his government will be asking the province for its views on limiting children’s social media use.

He referenced a recent Angus Reid poll that found that 75 per cent of Canadians supported a full ban on social media use for anyone under the age of 16.

“Canada should be considering options to limit social media use by minors,” Moe wrote on X.

The poll found that Canadians are concerned about children’s exposure to misinformation (92 per cent), cyberbullying (90 per cent), explicit content (85 per cent), impacting mental health poorly (94 per cent), and addiction (94 per cent).

Respondents put TikTok, X, and Snapchat at the top of their lists when asked what social media platforms to ban.

On Reddit, some people reacted to the premier’s announcement.

“I would LOVE this. I’m already keeping my kids off social media,” one user wrote. “At my last parent teacher interview the teacher asked me if this was the case. When I said it was, she said she could tell because my kid is one of the only ones in the whole class who still tries to solve problems on their own, can sit through a movie when they get one as a reward(!), can follow basic instructions, etc. My child is in grade SIX.”

“Parents should have already been doing this. Social media is eviscerating peoples ability to get quality information and make decisions,” another user said.

Others questioned how the government could enforce the tactic.

“The ONLY way to implement and enforce would be to require all social media to be linked to a digital id or drivers license. Slippery slope,” another Reddit user said.

In December 2025, Australia started implementing a social media ban for children under 16, blocking accounts on sites including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit, and TikTok.

Some provinces have already banned or restricted cellphones in schools, including B.C.Alberta, and Ontario.
