'RIP Ruby': Beloved Science World spider ambassador has died

Staff and visitors of Science World are mourning the recent death of a beloved spider member of the family.
The science centre confirmed to Daily Hive that Ruby, the Mexican Red-Kneed Tarantula, had recently passed away from old age.
Science World shared that the Ruby was over 20 years old and was a cherished part of the guest experience that will be missed by everyone.

“Ruby was spoiled and pampered by the Search: Sara Stern Gallery animal care team, and encouraged visitors (and staff) to overcome their fear of spiders,” Science World told Daily Hive.
“Once curiosity overcame nerves, the slow-moving Ruby caused fascinated visitors to come close, where they learned about urticating hairs, her main defence, despite her fangs.”

The Mexican Red-Kneed Tarantula was brought in as an ambassador by former Gallery Specialist Rhoda in 2003 when she was just three years old, and is named after Rhoda’s sister.
Members of the public shared condolences and memories of Ruby online.
“RIP Ruby,” said one commenter. “Twenty years. I had no idea they could live that long, so I guess she taught me one last thing.”
“Goodnight, Ruby. Thanks for the cool childhood memories,” added another person.

“Definitely a multi-generational ambassador and she’ll be missed,” said a Science World visitor. “Hopefully they’ll be able to find another who can fulfill this role so admirably.”
Science World shared that Ruby’s moult is embedded in resin for hands-on examination in the Search: Sara Stern gallery for all visitors to discover.
“Her shed beauty will remain in her memory.”
