City announces big shift for Granville Street during the FIFA World Cup

Granville Street in Vancouver is going to be a little more pedestrian-friendly during the FIFA World Cup.
On Wednesday afternoon, the City of Vancouver announced that Granville Street will be transformed into a pedestrian zone between June 11 and July 20 in what the City is calling a “people-first street.”
The Granville pedestrian zone will run between Georgia and Davie streets, or five blocks.
Some of the planned features for the pedestrian zone include live music, additional seating and expanded patios, vendors and food options and “placemaking and selfie spots.”
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon with the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association.
“Vancouver is proud to be a Host City for the FIFA World Cup 2026, and transforming Granville Street into a pedestrian zone is an exciting way to showcase the heart of our downtown to fans and visitors,” said Sim.

President and CEO of Downtown Van, Jane Talbot, said this is an opportunity to create lasting memories as a Host City.
“Through this initiative, we’re inviting Vancouverites to come downtown and experience the energy of the World Cup firsthand. Join us in the Granville Entertainment District to be part of the excitement and celebrate the pride and spirit of our city.”
Programming, activations and other facets of the pedestrian zone will be overseen by Downtown Van.

The pedestrian zone will lead to some changes for Vancouver traffic in the area. There will also be some notable impacts on TransLink’s operations.
“Cross streets, including Robson, Smithe, Nelson, and Helmcken, will remain open to vehicle traffic throughout the pedestrian zone. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times,” the City said in a release.
The City adds that TransLink buses that operate on Granville Street will be rerouted to Seymour Street and Howe Street. This will be supported by new bus lanes for the duration of the pedestrian zone.
“The City and TransLink will share detailed timing, route information, and wayfinding between relocated bus stops and SkyTrain stations in advance of the changes,” the City says.
Setup is set to begin in the first week of June.
