Snow alert issued for Metro Vancouver as freezing temperatures return

Mar 9 2026, 5:12 pm

Metro Vancouver drivers may want to hold off on switching back to all-season tires because snow is in the forecast for multiple days this week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for potential morning snow on Tuesday, March 10 and Wednesday, March 11.

Additional snow is also in the forecast for this weekend, with temperatures dropping down to as low as 0°C on Friday night.

“A cool and unstable airmass over the South Coast will bring freezing levels to near sea level before Tuesday morning,” said ECCC in its weather statement. “The low freezing levels combined with an approaching trough of low pressure will produce bands of flurries or showers on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Due to the convective nature of the precipitation, snowfall accumulations will be highly variable across the region. Although snow may reach sea level, accumulating snowfall is more likely at higher elevations. Current forecast guidance indicates the potential for 2 to 5 cm of snow.”

Parts of Burnaby also received an early dusting of flurries on Monday morning.

According to ECCC meteorologist Brian Proctor, anywhere in the region could receive snow, though some areas of Metro Vancouver should be more concerned.

“The North Shore mountains, SFU and Burnaby mountain, and the Surrey Delta Highland could see the most accumulation,” explained Proctor.

Proctor added that another storm track will be settling just south of Metro Vancouver later this week, which could bring more wet snow starting this weekend and heading into next week.

Daytime highs to start the week are expected to only reach 4°C on Tuesday, and up to 10°C on the weekend.

Overnight temperatures will dip down to 1°C on Monday and Friday, and just 0°C on Friday.
