Over half a million Ford vehicles recalled in Canada

If you drive a Ford vehicle, it could be part of a massive recall in Canada.

The automobile manufacturer has issued a safety recall for approximately 627,517 cars in Canada due to a software glitch in their trailer control modules.

A Ford spokesperson told Daily Hive that the issue may cause the trailer control module to stop communicating with the vehicle, which usually happens when it’s turned on. If this occurs while a trailer is connected, its stop lamps and turn signals won’t illuminate.

The Ford spokesperson added that vehicles equipped with a “high series” trailer module could lose their braking function altogether due to the software glitch.

“These conditions result in noncompliance with federal safety standards and can reduce a driver’s ability to control an attached trailer while making it less visible to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash,” explained the spokesperson.

The recall affects the following Ford vehicles: certain 2021 to 2026 F-150s, 2022 to 2026 Super Duty (F-250-600), 2024 to 2026 Ranger, 2022 to 2026 Expedition, 2022 to 2026 Navigator, 2022 to 2026 Maverick, and 2026 Transit vehicles.

“Ford is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or fires attributed to this issue,” the spokesperson noted.

What should you do if you have an affected Ford vehicle?

According to the manufacturer, if a vehicle experiences a communication loss, the driver will see a ā€œTrailer Brake Module Faultā€ message on the instrument panel cluster, and then the turn signal indicator will flash rapidly.

A ā€œBlind Spot Assist System faultā€ message may also appear on the dashboard.

Ford says it will provide an over-the-air-update to the Integrated Trailer Module software in the impacted vehicles in Canada to address the recall.

The update will be available for the majority of vehicles via Over-the-Air (OTA), dealership, or mobile service, starting March 17.

OTA updates are expected to be deployed for all vehicles by May.

This isn’t the only recent recall for Ford vehicles. In January, Transport Canada issued a recall for close to 200,000 cars due to issues with their engine block heaters.
