ICBC and BC Transplant announce record-breaking organ donor milestone

ICBC and BC Transplant are celebrating a major organ donation milestone, which is also a record-breaking one for 2025.

Both provincial organizations have been collaborating for a decade to increase donor registrations in B.C.

“Since employees at our drive licensing offices first began speaking with customers about organ donation in 2016, more than 395,000 ICBC customers have registered their decision,” ICBC said in a release.

It first began as a pilot project in a few licensing offices around the province, but now the effort is province-wide.

“We want to keep the momentum going and continue making it easy for our customers to register their decision on organ donation,” said Michele Bryan, ICBC’s director of driver licensing customer services.

ICBC also announced that 2025 was a record-breaking year as 575 people in B.C. received organ donations. ICBC says the feat is thanks to the generosity of 232 organ donors, which includes 146 deceased donors and their families, and 86 living donors.

“Right now, there are more than 600 people in B.C. waiting for an organ transplant. As April marks Organ Donation Awareness Month, we encourage customers to continue registering their decision and share their wishes with their family,” ICBC adds.

If you want to register to be an organ donor, ICBC says it takes less than two minutes on the organ donation website.

To register, you’ll need your BC Personal Health Number and your name, birth date, and B.C. address.

“You can register your decision at any age, though anyone under the age of 19 who registers in the Organ Donor Registry is recording their expressed wish on organ donation,” BC Transplant says.
