Major upgrades for Queensborough Bridge to begin this spring

Queensborough Bridge is set to undergo major rehabilitation work beginning in Spring 2026, aimed at improving safety, reliability and extending the lifespan of the busy Fraser River crossing.

The B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit announced today that a $20.8-million contract for the project has been awarded to Kingston Construction.

This work will include extensive bridge deck resurfacing, structural repairs, replacement of deck joints, and upgrades to the bridge’s drainage system. Construction is expected to be completed by Fall 2027.

Built in 1960, the Queensborough Bridge carries four lanes of Highway 91A traffic across the north arm of the Fraser River, linking New Westminster with the easternmost end of Richmond. It is a crucial route for not only arterial vehicle traffic on Lulu Island, but also from further south of the Fraser via the Alex Fraser Bridge.

Over the decades, the bridge has undergone several upgrades, including seismic improvements, the installation of a median barrier, and barrier walls separating pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

Today, the bridge serves nearly 88,000 vehicles per day, making it one of the region’s busiest crossings. According to the Ministry, the renewal project was identified as a priority through its asset management planning process.

While the work is underway, drivers can expect periodic nighttime lane closures to allow crews to work safely. Closures will be in effect in both directions between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weekdays, and until 8 a.m. on weekends. One lane will remain open in each direction during these hours to reduce traffic disruption, though drivers may experience some congestion early in the evening before traffic volumes decrease.

In late February 2026, all four vehicle lanes on the nearby new Riverview (stal̕əw̓asəm) Bridge will open. At that juncture, the old Pattullo Bridge will fully close, with decommissioning and demolition beginning immediately to enable the construction of the new bridge’s remaining road network connections, which will fully reach completion later in 2026.
