TransLink officially opens first public washroom at a SkyTrain station

One of Metro Vancouver’s busiest SkyTrain stations is officially home to the first public washroom in the rapid-transit system.
TransLink announced today that a brand-new washroom is now open at Metrotown Station.
According to a TransLink spokesperson, washrooms were the top-requested amenity by customers in the 2022 Customer Experience Action Plan engagement.

“We are excited to expand public washrooms on our system to make the transit system more convenient for customers,” said the spokesperson to Daily Hive Urbanized.
The Metrotown Station washroom is located between the west and central entrances and includes four individual stalls, one of which is accessible.
The washroom is open from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Sundays and holidays. There is no cost to use the facilities.

An attendant will staff the brightly lit washroom during operating hours to continuously monitor and clean the space as needed. Transit Security will also be nearby at all times to help ensure safety.
“Metrotown Station is a convenient location for a new facility because it is centrally located, it serves as a major transfer point between SkyTrain and buses, and it sees more than 25,000 boardings on a typical weekday,” explained TransLink online. “It is also the second busiest SkyTrain station in the region, second only to Waterfront Station.”
Eye-catching artwork designed by Vancouver artist Sandeep Johal decorates the Metrotown washroom.

Johal is a visual artist who has created murals throughout Vancouver, campaigns for clients like Holt Renfrew and Earls, and illustrations for the book Stories For South Asian Supergirls.

The new Metrotown washroom joins facilities already in place at Waterfront Station’s SeaBus Terminal and the Lonsdale Exchange SeaBus Terminal. Washrooms are also on board each West Coast Express train.
TransLink also added that it is seeking additional funding through future Investment Plans to add more washrooms to more locations.

“TransLink is planning for future washrooms to be opened in phases, starting with Phibbs Exchange, where plumbing was included during recent upgrades,” said the transportation authority in the announcement. “Following Phibbs Exchange, we’re doing early planning work to potentially add washrooms at Commercial–Broadway and Scott Road stations.
“Commercial–Broadway Station is the next busiest station on the system after Metrotown, and a washroom at this location would serve customers on both the Expo Line and Millennium Line. Scott Road Station is also an ideal location for Surrey riders due to the connected bus loop featuring the R6 Scott Road RapidBus, and the Park and Ride.”
