Vancouver traffic delays expected over long weekend on Highway 1

If you’re heading in or out of Vancouver this Easter long weekend, be warned, you could be hit with some traffic delays depending on your route.

According to the City of Vancouver, crews are completing repaving work on East 1st Avenue between Highway 1 and Boundary Road.

Road closures are taking place starting 5 a.m. on Sunday, April 5 and will last until 9 p.m. on Monday, April 6.

The City of Vancouver says that drivers should expect these around-the-clock traffic impacts:

  • East 1st Avenue closed in both directions between Boundary Road and Rupert Street
  • The ramps to and from Highway 1 closed, except for the eastbound off-ramp, which will stay open
  • Boundary Road closed between Gravely Street and East 2nd Avenue

For pedestrians, they’ll still be able to walk through the area during the closure. Additionally, VPD officers will be on site to support the public.

“Drivers are advised to plan ahead, use alternate routes and expect delays in the area, especially those who typically access or exit Highway 1 via East 1st Avenue,” the City says.

Thankfully, the repaving work is one of the final steps in a bunch of infrastructure upgrades to improve safety and comfort in the area.

“Upgrades include new curb ramps and improved pedestrian crossings between Rupert Street and Boundary Road; a new dedicated left-turn lane from East 1st Avenue to Valiant Street; and a new centre median to replace one temporarily removed for FortisBC work.”

The final remediation work, including line painting, is scheduled to take place later this April.

The City advises drivers to check out its road closures page for more information.
