What the next three months of spring weather may look like in Alberta

Apr 2 2026, 6:22 pm

It’s been a snowy start to spring for many areas in Alberta, and many may be anxious about how the weather is looking for the rest of the season.

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) latest temperature and precipitation probabilistic forecasts for the April to June 2026 timeframe were released late last month, allowing for an early peek at how the upcoming months of spring weather may shake out.

The three-month seasonal outlook is pushed out by ECCC at the end of each month and looks at meteorological trends for the current season.

It’s important to note that while the outlooks do offer what Alberta can expect temperature and precipitation-wise, they do not identify any significant weather events, such as storms.

Much of northern Alberta has a less than 40 per cent chance of seeing above normal temperatures, while the Rockies, Foothills, and extreme southern Alberta have a 50 to 60 per cent chance of above normal temperatures.

The graph below shows the forecast probability of temperatures below normal over the next three months in Alberta, reiterating the findings above that southern Alberta, the Rockies, and the Foothills are at just a 10 to 20 per cent chance of experiencing below normal temperatures during this period.

It’s a different story for portions of central Alberta and all of northern Alberta, with most under a 20 to 40 per cent chance of being below normal, while one area in northwestern Alberta is circled with a 40 to 50 per cent chance.

Looking at the forecast probability of precipitation over the coming months, the Waterton Lake National Park area and Lethbridge are at the greatest chances of seeing above normal precipitation.

Much of the province, including Edmonton and Calgary, are in the 30 to 40 per cent chance of seeing above normal precipitation.

The Old Farmers’ Almanac predicted a bit of a brisk start to spring earlier this year, saying the Prairies in April and May will be cooler than normal, with precipitation above normal in the east and greater than normal in the west. It also added that people should expect a little snow in early April, as well as periodic rainstorms in May.
