Granville Island to host free FIFA World Cup live match viewing zone

Soccer fans in Vancouver will have another place to gather for the FIFA World Cup this summer, with Granville Island announcing plans today for a large outdoor viewing zone during the tournament.
The major destination will host a free, family-friendly football viewing zone from June 11 to July 19, screening 92 of the 104 matches over the five-week tournament as part of celebrations surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Vancouver.
The viewing zone will be set against the distinctive structural lines of the Granville Street Bridge and will accommodate up to 1,000 seated spectators watching matches on a giant screen.

A conceptual artistic rendering shows the installation of a giant “Granville Island” sign on the east side of the bridge structure to further enhance the event’s backdrop. CMHC Granville, the federal entity that operates the attraction and is organizing this event, told Daily Hive Urbanized this will be a temporary sign.
The event space itself will also include food trucks, beer gardens, and a children’s activity zone, creating a festival-style environment aimed at both residents and visitors exploring Vancouver during the tournament.
CMHC Granville Island notes that the viewing zone’s central location is expected to draw local residents while also giving tourists visiting Vancouver during the FIFA World Cup a place to watch matches in a lively public setting.
The specific location on Granville Island is a large surface vehicle parking lot between Anderson Street and Old Bridge Street — immediately north of Granville Island Brewing. This is also a future major redevelopment site, eyed for a new elevator and staircase tower to the bridge and a significant market building.

Several established summer events will overlap with the FIFA World Cup viewing zone, including the Vancouver International Jazz Festival from June 26 to July 5, the Indian Summer Festival from July 9 to 19, and Canada Day celebrations on July 1.
With large crowds expected throughout the summer, visitors are encouraged to reach the island by public transit (TransLink’s No. 50 Waterfront Station/False Creek South bus route), walking, or cycling. Granville Island will again offer free secure parking for bikes, e-bikes, scooters and bike trailers, while the area also features docking stations for Mobi Bikes and Lime scooters as well as designated parking for car-share vehicles such as Evo.
There will also be extensive road closures in the downtown Vancouver peninsula, including a full closure of Granville Street between West Georgia Street and Davie Street from June 11 to July 20 to create a vibrant FIFA World Cup pedestrian zone, and additional road closures for the area around BC Place Stadium throughout the entire tournament period, with very extensive closures on match days at the stadium.
The Granville Island viewing zone announcement comes as Vancouver marks 100 days until kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. BC Place Stadium will host a total of seven matches, including five group stage matches (June 13, 18, 21, 24, and 26), a round of 32 knockout match (July 2), and a round of 16 knockout match (July 7).
The Granville Island viewing zone will be one of several public gatherings across the region celebrating the tournament. The largest official event will be the FIFA Fan Festival, planned by the City of Vancouver for the PNE fairgrounds at Hastings Park. The festival, also slated to run throughout the tournament, will feature large-scale live match screenings and concerts at the new 10,000-capacity amphitheatre, food and beverage offerings, cultural programming, sponsor activations, and FIFA merchandise sales, with the fairgrounds expected to carry a capacity for over 25,000 visitors per day.
More details about the FIFA Fan Festival at the PNE are expected to be announced soon.
Granville Island is joining other municipal governments in organizing their own community viewing events, although these will not feature FIFA branding because they are not official events.
The Surrey Soccer Fan Zones, hosted by the City of Surrey, will offer free live match screenings at three locations — Surrey Civic Plaza, Cloverdale Agriplex, and South Surrey Athletic Park.
Fan festivals and viewing zones are designed to bring the atmosphere of the global tournament to local communities, allowing residents and visitors to experience the excitement even if they are not attending matches in person.
During the 2010 Winter Olympics, a major Francophone cultural site called Place de la Francophonie — or simply the French Quarter — was held on a large surface vehicle parking lot on Granville Island. It operated throughout the Games and celebrated French-speaking culture from across Canada and the broader Francophone world. It hosted free concerts, cultural performances, exhibitions, a sports pub showing Olympic events, and food and tourism showcases highlighting Francophone communities.
