Vancouver cafe announces impending closure of all locations after 14 years of operation

Joining the unfortunately growing list of restaurants and cafes announcing closures in and around Vancouver, Matchstick has shared that it will be closing all four of its locations in the near future.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will be winding down operations at Matchstick Coffee,” the cafe wrote on Instagram on Friday morning. “Over the last few years, the landscape of our industry has shifted dramatically. Like many independent businesses, we have faced an increasingly challenging environment. After exploring every possible avenue, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors.”

Matchstick has operated numerous locations throughout Vancouver ever since it opened its Fraser location in 2012. It’s best known for its baked goods like croissants, pastries, and naturally leavened bread, alongside seasonal jams and house-made condiments. In 2023, the cafe closed its Chinatown location after nearly a decade.
The first Matchstick location to close will be its Yaletown outpost (1328 Richards St.), which will be closing on March 1. It will be followed by its Riley Park location (4807 Main St.) closing on March 15 and its original Fraser store (639 E. 15th Ave.) closing on April 1.
As for its Davie Street location, Matchstick said that it will remain open for the time being as the team finalizes plans for its closures in the near future.

“This decision was not made lightly, primarily because of the incredible people who make up our team. We are committed to supporting our staff through this transition with the respect, fair notice, and severance they deserve. We are honouring all commitments to our team, our landlords, and our suppliers as we navigate this wind-down,” said Matchstick.
The cafe went on to add that customers can redeem any gift cards at any of their locations before each respective closing date. Gift cards will be valid at the Davie location until further notice.
“Thank you for being part of our story in these neighbourhoods. We are incredibly grateful for every cup you’ve shared with us,” concluded the cafe.
