Vancouver is host to amazing arts and theatre events all year round, and we’re excited that the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) is bringing two thrilling shows to town next month.

The longest continuously operated ballet company in North America presents Carmina Burana and T’əl: The Wild Man of the Woods at The Centre for the Performing Arts on Feb. 9 and 10.

According to Christopher Stowell, RWB artistic director, the two works are among the company’s most lauded contemporary ballets.

Carmina Burana (is) a perennially popular favourite over the past 20 years,” said Stowell in a release. “T’əl: The Wild Man of the Woods, RWB’s most recently commissioned work, received enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences alike upon its world premiere in 2024.

“A testament to RWB’s immense versatility and virtuosity, we are privileged to bring this compelling double bill to Vancouver audiences for an unforgettable evening of visually stunning and breathtakingly daring choreography.”

The double-bill begins with a performance of Carmina Burana, which combines bold, athletic movement with Carl Orff’s moving and evocative score for a visceral theatrical experience.

RWB’s high-octane work demands everything of its dancers and leaves audiences exhilarated, moved, and inspired.

T’əl: The Wild Man of the Woods, created and choreographed by RWB School alumnus Cameron Fraser-Monroe, is a historic collaboration of Indigenous artists that blends storytelling, contemporary ballet, and classical music while honouring the richness of oral tradition.

The work is narrated in both English and Ayajuthem by Elder Elsie Paul, and scored by Juno nominee Cris Derksen.
