Hit TV show confuses some New West residents with grocery store set

Large-scale sets for film and TV shoots are a regular sight across Metro Vancouver, but a recent production filming in New Westminster looked a little too real for shoppers looking for their next grocery deals.
The Showtime survival drama series Yellowjackets has been filming its fourth and final season throughout the region.
Late last week, the Critics’ Choice Awards winner took over the intersection of 12th Street and 6th Avenue in New Westminster and transformed some local businesses into an accounting office, a hair salon, and a grocery store.
Neighbourhood resident Yaşar Bayar snapped photos from a nearby building and shared them with Daily Hive.

“We were notified by our strata that there will be filming in front of our building,” explained Bayar. “Later, I have heard from a council member that it was for Yellowjackets.”
Also supporting the news that the film set was for the hit series was a giant banner draped down the side of a building that read, “Our Girls R Back! Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!”
Yellowjackets is a TV series about a group of high school female soccer players who become the survivors of a plane crash in a remote forest. The thrilling series stars Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, and Tawny Cypress, among many others.
It took a moment for some local residents to catch on that the new businesses mocked up for filming were not real, and the news left some disappointed.
“Aw, man, I was pumped. Thought we were getting a convenience store,” said a commenter on a New Westminster community Facebook group.
“Lol, I drove by that yesterday and thought it was a new place opening,” added another.
“Be pretty hype if we did get a 12th Street Market there, I won’t lie,” shared a third.

Bayar agreed that the shoot and the faux shops showed off some of the “potential” of the neighbourhood.
“It revealed we could have a more lively neighbourhood with a few improvements,” he added. “It felt good.”
Yellowjackets has filmed each of its seasons in Hollywood North, which is shaping up for a busy year.
Season 3 of the hit HBO Max series The Last of Us is scheduled to film in Metro Vancouver until the end of November.
The popular sci-fi franchise X-Files will also begin filming a pilot for its Hulu reboot in Metro Vancouver starting this May, according to multiple online sources.
